The centre of the EU is famous for much more than just politicians. Brussels is a great destination if you're looking for a holiday in a city jam-packed with culture and things to do.

In the day time

In the centre of Brussels is the impressive Grand Place. The square is surrounded by beautiful buildings, some partially covered in gold, that are really worth seeing. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and bars within walking distance so the square makes for a great place to start your tour of the city. The square lights up in the evenings making it even more beautiful. If you feel like taking a short walk it's really easy to get across to the Cathedral of Saint Michael to take in a slice of the city's history, or else you can hire a tour guide to show you the sights and sounds of this true world city.

Nightlife

Brussels is the capital of Belgium, so like all capital cities it's full of people who want to make the most of their evenings. If you choose to travel to Brussels you'll be able to make the most of the great restaurants, bars and night clubs that make the city such a great place in the evenings.
If you're looking to sample the famous monk-brewed beers then there are a number of great bars to try out. Les Brasseurs de La Grand has a huge selection of beer and is located smack in the middle of the city, just off the beautiful main square. A firm favourite with tourists is the absinthe specialist bar Delirium Café, where they cater to all kinds of groups, but are especially popular with stag and hen dos.
For those who want a more authentic Belgian experience, you can try Le Roi Des Belges where you'll be able to learn a little bit about the culture and even go dancing if the mood strikes.

Brussels cuisine

The most famous meal in Brussels has to be Moules Frites, or mussels with chips in English. You'll find them on the menu at almost all the Belgian restaurants, with a number of interesting twists on the old classic. Leon de Bruxelles are well renowned for their selection of mussels. If you choose to visit you won't be disappointed with what you get.
If you want to try somewhere more upmarket and really push the boat out then Jaloa Gastronomique is a great place to go. This restaurant is set in one of the oldest buildings in Brussels, and seats only around thirty people. The intimate dining experience here comes in the form of a set menu, with each of the dishes being carefully planned to suit one another. In the summer there is outside dining. However, it's the charm of this old Brussels venue that makes the restaurant worth its price tag.

I paid for early access. We were told by email that there would be someone there so no entry code was needed. We waited 10 minutes for a security guard to let us in. He helped us with our cases but left us immediately chasing after another guest. We stood in a lobby not knowing what to do. There was a guy at a table on his laptop, but he didn't acknowledge us. I tried calling the number we were given, but it didn't work. Eventually I asked the guy at the table if he knew what we had to do. Apparently he was the receptionist. A simple acknowledgement would have been very helpful, but he ignored us for 5-7 minutes. Then we were charged £58 deposit which we won't get back for over a week. The room was clean but shabby. Marked walls, cracked tiles, and the kitchen facilities??? No Nespresso machine. Just a microwave, a kettle and a fridge in a cupboard. Even the curtains were a struggle to open/close. On leaving, we used the luggage room. Problem because the room is in the basement parking area. When the door closes behind you, you can't get back in the hotel. You have to leave via the garage door. So to collect your luggage later, you have to make sure there's someone at reception to let you in or you will not be able to get your belongings. Then to return the key, you have to go through the garage door and walk round for the guy to let you back in again. Ridiculous system. It spoiled, what should have been a wonderful city break.
