Things to see
The city has plenty of good looking architecture and, because of its location, a really diverse collection of religious buildings that look like they should on different continents, never mind the same street.
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the grandest of Sofia's buildings. The unusual building is made up of huge domes that make it really stand out from the crowd, and as if that weren't enough the Cathedral climbs more than 50 metres into the air. You'll find other religious buildings like the Banya Bashi Mosque and Boyana church that are not so grand, but have the same Sofia quirky character about them too.
A short walk south and you'll find the Monument to the Tsar Liberator. The statue is great for a photo opportunity, showing the Tsar on horseback looking over the square that is now a hub of tourist activity.
Of course there are plenty of more natural sights to be seen in the city too, like Lake Ariana. This small piece of water is located in Knyaz Boris' Garden (a central park in the city) and has pedalos for hire, which you can take to discover the tiny island in the lake's centre. The garden itself has some unique sculptures and architecture inside that make it a great spot to take a walk along with your camera.
Nightlife
There are plenty of places to choose from if you want to head out in the evenings in Sofia. The young and fashionable By The Way has some tasty light bites available and a good selection of drinks ranging from virgin cocktails to strong spirits. Start your evening here and you won't be disappointed by the hip atmosphere around you. Once you're ready for something a little more spacious give Bar 4 Rooms a try. This large bar has street art hanging from the walls and pub games in most corners.
