Information about flights to Bristol
Home to one of Britain's most coveted universities, Bristol became a prosperous maritime centre by the early 16th century, when many ambitious explorers embarked for the New World. Today, it's one of England's core cities, and is internationally renowned for its magnificent Clifton Suspension Bridge.
The cathedral
One of the finest and best-preserved cathedrals, Grade I-Listed Bristol Cathedral dates back to the 12th century and was once a powerful monastery. This 91-metre-high church benefited from a comprehensive restoration in the 19th century, and is noted for its magnificent stained glass windows and elaborate vaulting.
Queen Square
This splendid Georgian garden square was designed in the early 18th century and is surrounded by many fine Georgian buildings. It is one of the most desirable living destinations in the city, and is named after Queen Anne, who became reigning monarch of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1702.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge
Officially 150 years old in 2014, the Clifton Suspension Bridge was chiefly designed by one of Britain's most illustrious engineers, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and the two prominent architects, John Hawkshaw and William Henry Barlow. More than 400 metres long, the structure is also a Grade-I-Listed landmark and a fine example of British architectural innovation during the Industrial Revolution.
