Often thought of as more of a business destination than a holiday city, Frankfurt can be overlooked by travellers. But there's so much to see, explore and do whether you've got a few spare hours either side of a conference or you pick it for your next city break. It's a particularly interesting place to go if you like art, architecture and museums, but it's absolutely brilliant if what you love most is a city full of nice streets to wander around and great bars and restaurants to explore. Get there in 1hr30mins from London by plane – that's quicker than the train from London to Manchester!
Frankfurt landmarks worth a visit
As one of the tallest buildings in the city, the Main Tower is the only one tourists are allowed to climb, meaning it's the best place for 360Ëš views of Frankfurt. If you don't fancy the stairs, there's a lift which takes you almost to the top, only leaving you with one flight to tackle. Funnily enough, one of the next most popular attractions is the city's train station. As well as being architecturally impressive, the Frankfurt am Main Hauptbahnhof is full of great places to eat and shop. It's good to visit for a couple of hours, and of course the place to start if you're looking to explore further afield.
Described by many as a world-class gallery, the Stadel has paintings by some of the world's most famous artists. See the Lucca Madonna by Jan van Eyck, Portrait of a Young Woman by Sandro Botticelli, and Musicians in the Orchestra by Edgar Degas to name but a few. Once you've had your fill of great art, take a stroll along the Museumsufer, the southern embankment of Frankfurt's main river. It's so-called because of the number of museums packed along the way, but even if you don't fancy popping in and out of these, the river view is very attractive and there are lots of bars, cafés and restaurants to stop at.
For lovers of the great outdoors, Frankfurt is home to Plamengarten – the city's botanical gardens – the relaxing Chinese Garden and countless parks. Gunthersburgpark, Bethmannpark and Lohrpark are some of the most popular to walk or cycle around.
Where to take the kids
If you're taking the kids to Frankfurt, why not mix in wildlife and amusement parks with the city's wealth of cultural sights? Frankfurt Zoo has more than 5,000 animals to look at, from farmyard to exotic and everything in between. Rebstockbad is a large water park complete with pools of all sizes and depths, as well as slides, toys and more. For something more colourful, head to Stadtwald Forest either for a simple stroll or cycle during the summer festival series when it comes to life with a traditional fairground.
Don't write Frankfurt off as a business destination. It's a great city for short breaks and easy to get to from the UK.
