Highlights include the Saint Lambertus Basilica with its twisting spire, first built in the 13th century, with Renaissance marble tombs, Baroque altars and Gothic tabernacle. Then there's the Rathaus, the old Renaissance-style town hall and the Castle Tower. The square nearby, Burgplatz, won an award as the most beautiful in Germany and is a favourite spot to hang out among locals. Or stroll along the paved River Rhine promenade and take in the views from the 565-foot high Rhine Tower en route to the Media Harbour. This features stunning modern architecture by the likes of Frank O Gehry. Or why not hire a bike and cycle to the nearby medieval town of Kaiserwerth which houses the remains of what was once a mighty royal palace?
Arts and culture
Düsseldorf is crammed with an eclectic number of museums and art galleries. Highlights include the Museum Kunstpalast which houses everything from medieval sculpture to contemporary photography, and the Neanderthal Museum with some of the earliest Neanderthal skeletons ever discovered. Others are devoted to subjects ranging from film to modern art and Elvis Presley.
Düsseldorf also has many theatres, cinemas that show films in English and an opera house. There are venues dedicated to puppetry, musicals, acrobats and other variety acts, jazz, pop and cabaret. It also hosts an annual classical music festival, jazz rally and the contemporary Open Source festival.
Eating and Drinking
Make a beeline for the Old Town which is host to more than 250 pubs, bars and restaurants, something that has led to it being dubbed the longest bar in the world. Restaurants in Düsseldorf offer a range of regional, national and international cuisine. The city is known for its distinctive hoppy beer and is a great place to try the authentic German beer hall experience. Check out the famous Uerige.
Shopping
Düsseldorf is a designer label aficionado's paradise. You'll need to bring plastic when you shop along the Ko, as Konigsallee is known. Here you'll find the likes of Prada, Gucci and Luis Vuitton.
Nightlife
You'll be as spoilt for choice come evening as you were in the day. If you want your sounds hot and heavy, head to 3001, a clubber's nirvana, while the Anaconda Lounge is perfect for chilling. The very popular Melody Bar has great cocktails or soak up some culture at Zakk in a converted factory.
