Brussels
For visitors to Belgium's capital, Brussels' central square is a good place to start exploring. Around the Grand Place you'll find various markets and impressive 17th-century architecture. Time your visit during the festive season and you're sure to be wowed by the bright and colourful Christmas markets that take over the centre of the city. Find time to visit the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique to view works by artists including Hieronymus Bosch, or make for Horta Museum to learn all about the Art Nouveau movement and specifically the Belgian architect, Victor Horta.
Bruges
Situated right in the north of the country is the city of Bruges, a place known for its wonderfully picturesque cobbled streets, preserved medieval buildings and canals. Although it's something of a tourist haven, venture out onto the city streets early in the morning and you'll feel as though you have the place to yourself. Excellent restaurants, bars and cafés are plentiful, as are attractions to keep even the most active visitor occupied.
Go to the top of the Belfry of Bruges to enjoy incredible views over the historical centre and the surrounding area. Catch your breath and then head back down to enjoy a Belgian beer in one of the many cafes that fill the public square below. Take time to reflect during a visit to the Basilica of the Holy Blood, or head to the Groeninge Museum to find some fantastic Flemish art, including masterpieces by artists such as Jan van Eyck.
Ypres
The town of Ypres is a popular destination for visitors crossing the border from France with the intention of visiting the area's battlefields. This attractive ancient city has plenty to offer visitors, including ramparts that date back to the 14th century, the bustling Market Square, numerous excellent bars and restaurants, and plenty of chocolate shops too.
Battlefield tours can be easily arranged, or alternatively, choose to make your own way to visit sites such as Hill 60. Make your way to the Menin Gate in Ypres for 8pm to attend the nightly Last Post Ceremony.
