Most people who arrive in the town of Dalaman move on to nearby coastal resorts, to the north, around Marmaris, or to the south, around Olu Deniz. Dalaman offers a good base if you have transport from which to explore all that the region has to offer and the sulphur-rich mud baths, said to have healing properties, are a famous tourist attraction.
Fabulous coastal destinations
Historic Marmaris has enchanted visitors since the time of the ancient Greeks. Its pretty harbour and pebbly beaches are backed by pine-clad mountains. The town has a medieval castle and is famed for its very lively nightlife which is said to be the best on the south coast. Regular ferries sail from here to the Greek island of Rhodes and you can also catch boats to swimming spots nearby.
Kalkan has outstripped its origins as a pretty fishing village to become a major tourist destination and it's easy to see why. You'll love its many fine beaches such as Patara and Kaputas, and its whitewashed houses and abundance of bougainvillea make it a lovely destination. The area includes many historical sites such as the ancient hilltop settlement of Tios and Kekova Island. And its many rooftop restaurants up the hill offer a magical spot from which to enjoy an evening meal with views.
Fethiye, built on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos, is another wonderful and deservedly popular destination crammed with historic sites such as the Lycian rock tombs. Another great option is to catch a boat to Gemiler Island with its Byzantine ruins. Wander Fethiye old town with its famous market, head for the beaches of Calis, or Oludeniz, perhaps Turkey's most beautifully located beach. Why not head to the nearby breathtaking Saklikent Gorge with its gushing rapids?
Gocek is a charming and uncrowded location afforded special environmental protection. It means it's free of major development and its bay, with many coves and 12 islands, clean waters, beaches and pine forests are perfect for exploring by boat, the only way of enjoying lunch at The Amigo.
What to do
Apart from its many historic sites and beaches, Turkey's Mediterranean coast is a haven for water sports including scuba diving, snorkelling and sailing. Why not try paragliding at Dalaman or Fethiye? Soar beneath the cliffs at Olu Deniz where the International Air Games are held each October, or leave the beaten track by trekking part of the 311-mile Lycian way between Fethiye and Antalya. The scenery is breathtaking and empty apart from the odd farmer or goat herdsman.
Eating and drinking
Turkish food is among the best in the world and the quality of the produce used is exceptional. Eating out is often very good value and many Turkish people do so regularly. Kebabs are a speciality but there's plenty of choice for vegetarians.
