Adelaide in southern Australia is one of the country's largest cities. Because of where it is, Adelaide experiences a cooler winter, which can be a welcome break from some of the extreme heat elsewhere in the country.
Get to know Adelaide
Get up close and personal with the marsupials Australia is famous for at attractions like the Cleland Wildlife Park. And see more of the Australian scrub and varied plant life with a trip to the Adelaide Botanic Garden, which is open to the public and runs regular tours.
The River Torrens runs throughout Adelaide and alongside it is the Linear Park Trail where visitors can trace the river and enjoy a stroll in the shade amongst classic Australian surroundings. Similarly, Adelaide boasts a number of beaches; Henley beach and Aldinga Beach are both great if you fancy a long walk, or you're looking for somewhere to simply sit and soak up the Australian climate.
If you're looking for an easy way to get around the city, the Glenelg Tram makes for a fantastic day tour of urban Adelaide. Available via individual ticket or Metro card the tram can be a great way for you to move between popular sights and sounds. The tram takes passengers across the city from the beach just outside the luxury Stamford Grand hotel, to the Entertainment Centre that regularly hosts concerts and events like stand-up comedy.
The culture of Adelaide
There's no shortage of great things to see in Adelaide. Saint Peter's Cathedral is an impressive relic of Australia's Anglican routes, and is within easy walking distance of the Adelaide Oval. The Oval plays host to plenty of sport, but also regular concerts and other entertainment events.
You won't have to look far to find art and history in Adelaide, with the Art Gallery of South Australia well linked to the rest of the city. The museum entry fee is reasonable, particularly for groups and families with discounted tickets for groups. The State Library of South Australia offers similar experiences, with regular events focusing on the history of Australia and Adelaide, as well as exhibitions of books and art too.
If you have an interest in transport, Adelaide has some interesting stuff to get stuck into. Australia's heritage in engineering makes Adelaide a great place to learn about some of our favourite ways to get around. Two great places to visit are the Classic Jet Fighter Museum and the National Railway Museum. Both are fun and educational for kids and adults, and give you the chance to look at these impressive machines up close.
