Grand Palace
A must-see for anyone who visits Bangkok, Grand Palace is a dazzling city landmark that was built in 1782 as the home of the Thai king. And so it remained for 150 years - serving as the Royal court, as well as the seat of government, the base for the Thai war ministry and even the mint. Within the palace complex you'll find a several highly impressive buildings, many of which are extravagantly designed and decorated in vivid gold, orange, pink and yellow hues. One of the most important is Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) which houses a 14th-century green Buddha, cherished and revered by the Thai people.
Boat trip
Wending its serpentine way through the city, Chao Phraya River, along with Bangkok's many canals, plays an important role in the day-to-day life of the locals. And what better way to see the city than by boat? Secure the services of a tour guide and as you travel, they will explain the mores of Thai society, point out interesting landmarks that you might otherwise miss and provide fascinating background detail. One of the most impressive sights that you'll see on your trip is Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)
Midnight cowboy
When the sun goes down, Soi Cowboy comes alive. Lit by colourful neon lights, this district positively implores you to take a walk on the wild past brightly bedecked go-go bars. Soi Cowboy is a strip of nightlife in Bangkok that hasn't quite been tempered by political correctness and is, for the most part, harmless fun.
Shopping and eating
For a hip place to shop, head over to Siam Square where all the cool cats hang out. Siam Square One, a seven-storey mall, is the place for all the latest fashions and technology. And not to be outdone, MBK has eight floors with around 2,000 shops so there's every chance you'll find what you're looking for - or something that you weren't looking for! And for a 16-screen cinema, a huge aquarium, top cuisine and 250 stores selling international couture, among other things, Siam Paragon is the place to be.
Chinatown Market is thrummed with old shops and past-their-prime market stalls selling anything from gold nuggets to gaeng daeng (red curry). And once you've found yourself a bargain or two, make sure to you visit Wat Traimit (Temple of the Golden Buddha).
With its mix of bars, restaurants, food stalls and shops, Soi Rambuttri makes for a pleasant diversion from frenetic Chinatown and Bangkok's busy malls. This horseshoe-shaped road features Bombay Blues where you can make yourself comfortable on one of the many large pillows and enjoy some Indian cuisine in super-chilled surroundings.
