Information about flights to Phuket
The largest island in Thailand, Phuket is renowned for its emerald waters, breathtaking rocky coves and spotless sandy beaches. The area was originally known for its substantial mining industry but is now one of the world's most prestigious holiday destinations, witnessing a significant growth in tourism after the opening of Phuket International Airport. The island is a popular stopping point for cruise ships and is known for its extensive nightlife and excellent seafood establishments, many of which are based in the main resort of Phuket town.
The Beaches
More than threee kilometres long, the beautiful Karon Beach is known for its pristine fine sand and exclusive resorts such as the Best Western Phuket Ocean Resort and the Bamboo House Phuket. Head further south towards the island's southern extremities and relax at the smaller Nai Harn Beach, which is known for its pleasant, tranquil atmosphere and is the home of The Royal Phuket Yacht Club.
Go further east to the secluded Ao Yon beach, another spectacular sandy bay, or head to the nearby Playa Panwa beach, which is within walking distance of the deluxe Regent Phuket Cape Panwa resort. In the far north of the island is the Mai Khao Beach, which is 11 kilometres long and is like an endless tropical haven, situated in the Sirinat National Park and overlooked by the luxury JW Marriott Phuket Resort.
Historic sights
Explore the wonderful mansions of the Old Phuket Town area and learn about how the island achieved immense wealth from its tin industry. The Old Town is home to many great landmarks such as the Portuguese-Sino style Thai Hua Museum and the Baan Chinpracha mansion, as well as the fabulous boutiques of Thalang Road. The Thavorn Hotel Museum, meanwhile, showcases some of the most important memorabilia in the island's history, from old typewriters and decorations to discarded artefacts that could easily be one person's junk and another person's treasure.
Best time to visit
Due to its tropical location, Phuket experiences an extended rainy season from May to November, although you can still enjoy plenty of calm, sunny weather even during this period. The best time to visit the island is from December to March, when the weather is considerably drier and a little less humid. The sea is much more suited to swimming during the dry season and can become rather choppy during the wettest months. However, it is easier to find much cheaper hotel deals in the low season, when Phuket's beaches are much quieter.
