The proud European Capital of Culture in 2013, Košice, in lush eastern Slovakia, is known for its terrific historic district. Each September, it organises a superb wine-tasting festival, where visitors have the chance to taste some of Slovakia's best reds and whites, as well as many other acclaimed international wines. This delightful medieval city earned great wealth from its trade with Poland and Hungary in the late Middle Ages. Today, many people book direct flights to Košice International Airport, which is served by destinations such as London Luton Airport, Vienna and, Bergamo.
The East Slovak Museum
A good place to begin your itinerary is a trip to the East Slovak Museum, which is known for its elaborate Renaissance-style façade and dates back to the 1870s. Here, you can learn about the medieval and modern history of Košice and the rest of eastern Slovakia, and observe some of its most precious treasures.
The Cathedral
One of the great architectural wonders of Košice is its towering St Elisabeth Cathedral, which was completed more than 500 years ago. This finely preserved Gothic landmark received a significant renovation in the late 19th century, and is the largest church in the country.
The zoo
More than 700 acres, Košice Zoo is the largest in the country, housing hundreds of animals. The family-themed attraction, which marked its 30th anniversary in 2015, protects more than 150 species, from parrots and lions to raccoons and brown bears.
A little further afield&colon Spiš Castle
Take a day trip to this spectacular 12th-century castle, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Europe's biggest fortresses. Following a devastating fire in the 18th century, Spiš Castle was reconstructed in later years, and offers phenomenal views of the mountains and striking rock formations.

If you're a fan of scrumptious Italian cuisine, you can go to the Pizzeria Zvon, or dine at the Stara Sypka restaurant or Krcma Letna for some inspiring local dishes.
