Waterside wonder
A thriving port, Padstow has a working harbour and a very picturesque one at that, with its colourful, bobbing fishing boats, gaggle of pretty buildings. There are also lovely views across the bay - particularly of nearby Rock. The harbour is a magnet for locals who come to meet and chat, and visitors who enjoy the ambience and the scenery.
You're never far from a beach in Padstow. From Treyarnon Bay and Constantine Bay to Harlyn Bay and Tregirls Beach, the sandy shores are kissed by the rippling turquoise sea. Whether taking a leisurely stroll, a long-distance walk, relaxing on the beach, having fun in a dinghy or surfing, the variety of this part of the Cornish coast provides something for everyone.
Surf's up
The beaches in and around Padstow each offer different surfing opportunities, with the best being Treyarnon, Constantine, Harlyn, Trevone and Polzeath. Don't worry if you're keen to try but have no experience, there are local surf schools that will teach basic technique and dispense good advice.
Cruise control
There's so much water at your disposal and plenty of different ways to travel on it. You can charter a boat and try your hand at landing, roach, bream, tench, carp and other fish that swim in the estuary and sea. If you fancy a rapid form of transport then take a trip in a speed boat. It's a great way to get around the Camel Estuary, pass the beaches of Daymer, Polzeath, Hawker's Cove and St George's Well. Or board the Jubilee Queen for a more leisurely coastal cruise, and visit the offshore islands. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, seals and even sharks.
Eating and drinking
Padstow has a huge amount of restaurants, cafés and bars, many of them taking advantage of the sea's natural resources.
Paul Ainsworth at No. 6 is enjoyed for its "hearty portions of unpretentious, uncomplicated food" and relaxed, friendly atmosphere. A restaurant that opened to acclaim in 1975, and has subsequently gained fame wider fame, is Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant. Cornwall is known for its pasties and Chough Bakery is an award-winning establishment that provides this local delicacy straight from the oven. For fresh coffee and a selection of delicious cakes, Cherry Trees Coffee House is popular with visitors and locals alike.
