Falmouth Hotels

Beach life

The sandy beaches are, of course, one of the main reasons to visit Cornwall, and Falmouth has some of the best, all just a stone's throw away from the town centre.

Located just a short walk away from Pendennis Castle, which we'll come to later, Castle Beach is the best location for wildlife. Buy some nets and buckets for the kids and let them explore the fascinating rock pools by the water's edge, while you relax further up the beach with a good book.

For more conventional sun, sea and sand, Gyllyngvase Beach is the place to be. There is plenty of room to lay down your towel and pop into the water for an occasional dip. If you're feeling a bit thirsty or peckish, the Gylly Beach Café has everything you could want, from delicious coffee to excellent homemade cake and, of course, piles of chips.

If you're after a more secluded spot for an invigorating swim, Maenporth Beach, just a short walk from the more popular beaches, is where you want to go. This lovely stretch of sand is enclosed in a scenic bay and surrounded by luscious woodland, perfect for an evening stroll.

Old Falmouth

Though it might be tempting to spend all your time in Falmouth on one of its wonderful beaches, it would be a shame to miss its multitude of great attractions. The town is full of incredible old buildings and a walk by the harbour on a summer's evening is an unforgettable endeavour.

As a way of killing two beautiful birds with one stone, on the way to Castle Beach, pop in to Pendennis Castle, one of the finest fortresses in all of England. Built by Henry VIII, the castle now has a first-class Discovery Centre where kids and parents alike can explore the area's history using interactive exhibits.

Back in the harbour, learn more about Falmouth's maritime heritage at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Opened in 2003, the museum is an architectural marvel and houses an incredible collection of boats from over the years. There is also an underwater observation window, where you can see all that goes on underneath the boats in the harbour.

New Falmouth

After taking a step back in to Falmouth's past, jump headlong in to its exciting present. The town has a thriving arts scene and is home to Falmouth University, which specialises in Art and Design.

The award-winning Falmouth Art Gallery, which is free to enter, has one of the South West's leading collections. The regular programme of special exhibitions is joined by the works of British greats such as Henry Scott-Tuke and Sir Alfred Munnings.

This being the world's third-largest natural deep water harbour, Falmouth is also a seafood paradise. Make sure you visit The Shack, in Discovery Quay, for some of the freshest fish you'll ever eat. Hunky Dory also has top quality seafood, but complements it with an extensive menu offering plenty for those who are not so enamoured with the fruits of the ocean.

If you still have time on your hands, one of our Falmouth Hotels would be an excellent base from which to take a hike up the Fal River, which runs through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With so many wonderful things to do, Falmouth really is the place to be.
