The original settlement goes back at least as far as the Bronze Age and two burial urns from that era were discovered nearby. Once the centre of the county's pilchard fishery, Mevagissey still has a working harbour complete with its coterie of small fishing boats. As long ago as 1745, the town has been associated with boat-building.
A great way to see this part of the Cornish coast is to travel by ferry to the attractive port of Fowey further up the shore.
