The human History of this area is long. In the 19th century, flint tools were found that show the site of Portrush was occupied during the Irish Mesolithic period, around 6,000 years ago. The port itself began to develop in the 12th and 13th centuries because of its excellent natural defences and there was once a church on Ramore Head from this era, but no trace of it exists today. Two castles were also built here, but they too have vanished.
For centuries Portrush was a successful fishing town, until tourism began to develop in the 19th century with the help of burgeoning railway links. Superb local beaches, the Royal Portrush Golf Club and the nearby Giant's Causeway each contributed to the town's rise as a place to visit.
Nearby you can explore the dramatic ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched on steep verdant crags above the ocean. The castle was occupied by the MacQuillan and MacDonnell families before being besieged by the British in the 16th century. Near this fascinating ruin you can explore Whiterocks Beach which offers both lovely stretches of sand and a fascinating complex of natural caves, carved into the soft limestone cliffs above. The Old Bushmills Distillery, just a few miles east of Portrush makes an inspiring visit. The world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery, having been granted a licence to distil in 1608, is today a great place to watch whiskey making in progress, and of course sample the famous product too!
Award-winning restaurants, top chefs and fabulous local produce combine to make Portrush hotels perfectly placed for culinary adventures. The Ramore Wine Bar is well known for the finest fresh food, a lively atmosphere and it's spacious contemporary interior. The menu has something to delight everyone. The impressively situated 55 Degrees North overlooks the Arcadia and offers long views over the East Strand and the Causeway Coast. Cuisine is eclectic and international.
