A history

Ballymena did not develop into a busy community until after the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, when large numbers of English farmers moved to the area to create plantations. The town was overlooked by a striking medieval castle, although this was removed in the 18th century and replaced with a country mansion by the late 19th century.
