You won't have to worry about where to stay, either. The golfers among you will be well served by the Carnoustie Golf Hotel, which offers spectacular views of both the course and the town. If you would prefer to stay at a B&B, the Old Manor Carnoustie is known for its outstanding service.
A rich history
The first stop for any visitor to Carrickfergus should be the 13th-century castle which defines the town. Impossible to ignore, and just a short walk from the railway station, this imposing structure is in remarkably good condition. This may have something to do with its continued importance as a military outpost right up until 1928. Besieged at various points throughout history by the English, the French, the Scots and the Irish, it was in near-constant use for over 700 years, and was involved in conflicts ranging from the Nine Years' War to the American Revolutionary War. These days, the castle plays host to a variety of medieval exhibitions and events, which show life as it was. It's highly recommended to pay a visit during your stay.
The town itself is not without its historical legacy, either. In the 1970s, for example, the textile industry had a strong presence in Carrickfergus. Those interested in American history will be no doubt fascinated by the Andrew Jackson Cottage – this house, just outside the town, was where the seventh president of the United States grew up before emigrating with his parents. The interior has been restored to how it would have been in his time, and is well worth a look.
Get out and about in the scenic Irish countryside
Sport plays a big role in life in Carrickfergus, and with such a beautiful setting, it's understandable. The town boasts no less than four golf courses, bowling greens and numerous walks, and there are a number of play areas dotted around. It's worth mentioning that Belfast Lough is fantastic for sailing, too. Fitness fanatics should also pay a visit to the town's leisure centre, which offers a fitness suite, Jacuzzi and sauna.
Food and accommodation
Carrickfergus's eclectic selection of restaurants is sure to satiate your hunger during your stay. The Keep Grill is known for its delicious, no-nonsense fare and attentive service, while the Mayur restaurant – serving up scrumptious Indian food – is a must.
There's also a good selection of Carrickfergus hotels to choose from, such as the Dobbins Inn Hotel, which provides comfortable rooms in a cosy setting.
