Pembroke Castle is a major draw for tourists. A structure first appeared on the rocky promontory in about 1093, but it wasn't until the late 12th century that the castle was rebuilt in stone. Harri Tudur, born here in 1457, went on to become Henry VII of England after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Wander through the castle's rooms, down its spiral staircases and along its battlements to get a real feel for what life must have been like in medieval times.

After exploring the castle, head out below the ramparts onto Main Street to admire the Georgian and Victorian architecture on show. You'll find a variety of independent shops dotted throughout the town, along with a great choice of cafés, pubs and restaurants offering refreshments. Carry on along Mill Pond Walk before looping back into town for a deserved rest.

Out and about

There are plenty of attractions within easy reach of Pembroke, so if you're spending a few days in the area you'll have lots to keep you occupied and entertained. Head west out of town to join up with the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which follows the county's coastline for 186 miles. Hidden coves, dolphins, Neolithic tombs and Iron Age forts are all waiting to be discovered.

Barafundle Beach, near the village of Stackpole, is a beautiful small bay offering a swathe of golden sand and clean waters. Also try and find time to visit St Govan's Chapel nearby. This fascinating building was built into the side of a limestone cliff and parts of the chapel are believed to date back to the 6th century. Get active and make the most of the area's coastal waters by booking a surf lesson through Outer Reef Surf School, or opt for a more relaxed few hours by visiting Stackpole Walled Gardens, where you'll find a fantastic range of plants, fresh fruit and vegetables.
