Oundle, a settlement since the Iron Age, has been invaded by Saxons and was recorded in the Domesday Book where it was listed as consisting of 36 households, 10 of which were smallholders and three were slaves. As the area grew in prosperity, so too did Oundle.
A leisurely 20 minute stroll north will take you to Oundle Wharf where you can take a tour of the award-winning Nene Valley Brewery. Smell the fresh tangy hops and malted barley that go towards making the variety of beers fermented here. You'll also have the opportunity to sample some of the finished products in the company of an informative brewery expert.
Less than five miles from Oundle is Lyveden New Bield, an Elizabethan lodge with a moated garden. Maintained by the National Trust, this Grade I listed manor house began construction early in the 17th century. It remained unfinished after builders downed tools following the death of its intended occupier, Sir Thomas Tresham. Despite this, the edifice cuts an impressive, if forlorn, sight, remaining virtually untouched for over 400 years. Explore the Elizabethan pleasure garden and stately pile, with is terraces and spiral mounts. See if you can spot the channels in the walls which were created to house water-carrying lead pipes. The orchard has been restored to its former glory and you can now walk from the house to the one-time royal hunting grounds of Rockingham Forest.
For a collection of traditional and contemporary art, the Dolby Gallery is definitely worth a visit. As well as paintings, you'll find handmade jewellery, pottery, ceramics, fused glass, and hand-crafted furniture created by artists from all over the country. You'll also have the opportunity to buy prints of many of the exhibited pieces.
Nestled within a row of shops, Dexters is an eatery with a good reputation because of its courtyard setting, food, service and atmosphere. The owners describe their establishment as "a chameleon from day to night." Located at Oundle Wharf, Tap and Kitchen is a waterside restaurant and bar that serves morning coffee, lunch, bar food and dinner, with breakfast served at weekends. And The Chequered Skipper in the nearby village of Ashton is a pretty thatched country pub that welcomes young and old, and even canine, patrons. The pub is popular for its food and selection of beers. Keep an eye out for peacocks that roam around outside.
The town has a number of traditional retailers, from gift shops, candy stores, antiques dealers and jewellers to newsagents, an outdoor equipment and clothing shop, bookstores, wine merchants and butcher's. There are also a couple of supermarkets and the town holds regular markets too.
