2022 marks the 109th edition of the Tour de France.
Running for three weeks from 1st-24th July, the 21 stage course will see the world's top cyclists tackle 3328 kilometres (about 2068 miles) of some of the roughest, toughest, and the most beautiful terrain in Europe. While most of the route covers north, south and central France, this year's race visits four countries in total, with the first three stages taking place in Denmark, and quick crossings over the French border to Switzerland and Belgium.
You can find out more about the race, and the best places to visit on the route in our Tour de France 2022 crash course.
This year's race sees Denmark become the 10th country to host the Tour de France's Grand Depart. And it makes for a fitting choice of starting location, as Denmark is a nation that's truly in love with cycling. The opening stage (1st July) is a time trial around Copenhagen, one of the world's most bike-friendly capital cities. Stage 2 (2nd July) starts in the historic city of Roskilde, and finishes in Nyborg, taking in Storebæltsforbindelsen, one of the world's longest suspension bridges. Finally, the Vejle to Sønderborg stretch (3rd July) passes some of Denmark's most beautiful beaches and architectural landmarks.

Belgium marks the third country on this year's Tour de France route, with stage 6 starting in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed city of Binche (7th July), before passing through the Ardennes and back over the French border to Longwy. Two days later the route takes the cyclists into Switzerland, passing along the coast of Lake Geneva and the city of Lausanne (9th July) before the first real mountain challenge of this year's race, the 183km Alpine stretch between Aigle and Châtel (10th July).
