Historical background

The settlement, which has existed since the late medieval period, was traditionally reliant on fishing for its livelihood, as you might expect. However, other people earned a living from smuggling, which continued until the French Revolution in the late 18th century, when there was widespread public resentment at the increase in taxes to fund Britain's ambitious and costly military endeavours.

The Polperro Harbour Heritage Museum

Learn about the history of Polperro's notorious smuggling industry since the Georgian period in this former pilchard factory, which contains many interesting photos related to the village's fishing heritage. The museum also has an elegant tea room and offers superb panoramic views of the harbour.

The Polperro Model Village

See the fishing settlement replicated in this impressive model village, which includes a model railway and has fortunately survived several floods over the decades. The Polperro Model Village also features the Land of Legend attraction, where you can learn more about the stories of Cornwall's smugglers and pirates, and has a terrific sound, lights and animation show.

Nearby: Looe

Another picturesque but larger harbour settlement, Looe is famed for its New Year's Eve celebration, which comprises a fancy dress party and attracts hundreds of visitors. The town is also renowned for its music festival in September, and is close to the breathtaking cove of Talland Bay.
