Birthplace of a famous artist

Plympton is the birthplace of the distinguished 18th-century artist Sir Joshua Reynolds, who lived in the settlement for many years and was elected as the mayor in 1773. He was a pioneer of the 'Grand Style' painting movement, a perfected classical art style centred on the aesthetic principles of the High Renaissance era of the late-14th and early-15th century.

Plympton Castle

Built in the early 12th century, Plympton Castle is on a large pre-Norman motte and is somewhat smaller than many other motte-and-bailey style castles in Britain. Unfortunately, like many other medieval defences, it was besieged during the English Civil War in the mid-17th century, although parts of the structure have been carefully preserved.

Saltram House

See the magnificent Georgian landmark of Saltram House, which is maintained by the National Trust and overlooks a wonderful landscaped park. The building was once the residence of the wealthy Parker family, and now displays many of Sir Joshua Reynold's most celebrated paintings.

What to see nearby

Visit Plymouth's world-renowned City Museum and Art Gallery, which opened well over a century ago and is housed in an attractive Edwardian Baroque building. You can also see the National Marine Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the country, or spend some time at the Mayflower Steps, where the Pilgrim Fathers disembarked for North America in 1620.

If you have the time, consider a day trip to Dartmoor National Park, which is just a short drive from Plympton hotels. It is a very popular destination for hiking, cycling, canoeing and kayaking, and is the location of the prehistoric Grey Wethers stone circles.
