Nantwich has a history reaching back to the Roman period when salt from the area was used by garrisons in Chester. The town has traditionally been a useful source of salt, with eight salt houses recorded in Nantwich in the Domesday Book. This long history means that, outside of Chester, Nantwich has the largest collection of historical buildings in the county. The oldest building in the town is the Grade I listed red sandstone St Mary's Church, dating from the 14th century with restorations made during the 19th century. The Queen's Aid House is a Grade II listed timber-framed building built in the late 16th century, and the Churche's Mansion is a Grade I building dating from 1577.
One of the best places to learn about the history of the area is Nantwich Museum, set in the centre of town and full of exhibitions detailing the heritage of the town from Roman salt making to a great fire during the Tudor period and the Civil War Battle of Nantwich.
Markets have been held at Nantwich from 1500 and the present market is housed in a 19th-century building at the junction of Market Street and Churchyardside. In addition to fresh local produce, the market is home to the cosy Tea Chest café and a haberdashery shop selling fabrics and sewing equipment. There are also regular Farmers' Markets in the town, as well as the Nantwich Food and Drink Festival – an ideal celebration for foodies.
If you're visiting Nantwich with a car, there are a number of interesting locations within easy driving distance of the town. The historical town of Chester is located to the north west of Nantwich, home to a range of attractions including Chester Cathedral, Chester Zoo and Chester Racecourse. If you drive a similar distance to the north east you'll soon come to the Peak District National Park, as vast area of exceptional natural beauty.
