History

Transportation has played a major part in Crewe's history and for many years the town boasted a major railway engineering facility for manufacturing and overhauling locomotives.

From 1946 until 2002 Crewe was the home of the original Rolls-Royce motorcar and its production. While the famous silver lady has now left the town, the Pyms Lane factory on the west of the town now produces the equally luxurious Bentley motorcars.

Culture and attractions

Mixing culture and art successfully, Crewe's Edwardian-built Lyceum Theatre is in the centre of the town and also houses an art gallery. Built in 1911, the theatre shows everything from drama and pantomime to ballet and opera. There are also regular live music concerts, though the main live music venue in Crewe is The Box on Pedley Street.

Crewe also has a heritage centre in the town, which is located in the old LMS railway yard for Crewe railway station. The museum has three signal boxes and an extensive miniature railway with steam, diesel and electric traction.

The town's main park is Queen's Park, which features walkways, a children's play area, crown green bowling, putting, a boating lake, grassed areas, memorials and a café. For those looking for indoor fun, Phoenix Leisure Park houses a multiplex cinema and bowling alley.

Crewe has a leisure centre which offers many activities such as badminton, dance and fitness classes, indoor football, hockey, netball and more. There is also a swimming pool open to the public on Flag Lane.
