The bridge
Designed in the 1770s, the Grade I listed Iron Bridge was built over the River Severn, which, at 220 miles in length, is the longest river in Britain. The bridge, which has often been considered one of the 'Seven Man-Made Wonders of Britain', was designed by the eminent architect Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, born in nearby Shrewsbury, and built by Abraham Darby III, who was born in nearby Coalbrookdale. The bridge is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and benefited from a comprehensive restoration in the 1970s.
The Blists Hill Victorian Town
Maintained by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum, the reconstructed Blists Hill Victorian Town is a fascinating open-air exhibition where you can learn more about the life of a typical Victorian Shropshire community in the Victorian era and the early-20th century. The museum, which is in Telford's Madeley district, opened in the 1970s and also showcases the industrial heritage of the area and the history of local coal production.
