You'll find plenty to keep you occupied during your time in this bustling town. What's more, all of our Market Drayton hotels are close to the area's most popular sights. At the centre of Market Drayton lies the Buttercross, a stone portico built in the early-19th century to act as a cover for stallholders. It's around here that the town's vibrant street market and indoor market are held each Wednesday and Saturday.

Market Drayton Museum on Shropshire Street focuses on local history and is a great place to begin any visit to the town. Wander through the streets to take in the picturesque half-timbered and red brick buildings, and browse through the excellent range of independent shops. Make sure you find time to sample some of the local gingerbread that the town is famous for. This sweet treat has been produced in Market Drayton since at least 1793.

Be sure to take a minute to admire St Mary's Church. Constructed from local sandstone, the oldest part of the building is from Norman times and dates back to 1150.

For live entertainment, consider a visit to The Festival Drayton Centre. The community facility runs a varied programme of events and is home to a cinema, theatre, exhibition gallery, meeting spaces and a coffee shop.

Further afield

Venture a little further out of town to find the picturesque Shropshire Union Canal, built by Thomas Telford between 1827 and 1835. Feed the ducks, lend barge owners a hand to open and close the impressive lock gates or simply stretch your legs with a wander along the banks.

Also close by is Wollerton Old Hall with its award-winning gardens, and the equally impressive Dorothy Clive Gardens. Both are excellent options if you're intending to enjoy some fresh air. Half an hour's drive south of Market Drayton is the World Heritage Site of Ironbridge. Here you'll find a collection of ten excellent museums dedicated to telling the story of the Industrial Revolution.
