Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the African coast and is known for its varied landscape and beautiful coastline, which could not be more diverse. Tenerife offers beaches of light, soft sand; rocky coves with turquoise waters; but often also dark sand, which is almost black. The reason for this is the volcanic origin of the island. The most beautiful beaches and the most popular holiday resorts of Tenerife are located on the south of the island. Due to the mild climate in Tenerife, which is also called the island of eternal spring, every season is perfect for a relaxing beach holiday.
Among the best beaches on the Canary Island of Tenerife is undoubtedly Playa de Las Teresitas. Just 7km from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, holidaymakers and locals bask here in the golden yellow, powdery sand, which has been transported here from the Sahara in the 1970s. The planted coconut palms provide shade and a reef was created in front of the bay so that the sand is not washed back into the sea. A good infrastructure with toilets, kiosks and a police station provides for your well-being. Our tip: Enjoy a Caribbean flair in the middle of Tenerife with a cool cocktail from one of the beach bars.
One of the cleanest beaches in Tenerife is Playa del Duque on the Costa Adeje in the very sunny and dry south-west of the island. It is about 700m long, made of fine, white sand and runs flat into the sea. Because of the upstream breakwater, you only get gentle waves here. Here you will find numerous restaurants, bars and changing rooms and you can try different water sports such as surfing, diving or sailing. Our tip: Stroll along the long promenade between La Caleta and Playa de las Américas - including enchanting views of the sea.
Playa de Los Cristianos is one of the most sought-after beaches on the island for families with young children, because the coast so shallow and the sea so quiet, unlike anywhere else in Tenerife. The bright, sandy beach in the south of Tenerife invites you to play and dream. From the sand you can see the fishing boats and ferries of the nearby port of Los Cristianos. The promenade leads from the beach directly to the centre of Los Cristianos, where countless shops await you. Our tip: Take a jet ski tour from Playa de Los Cristianos to see whales and dolphins.
Lots of sunshine all-year round - that's what Playa Fañabé promises on the south-west coast of the island. Locals and tourists bask in the light grey sand, which has been artificially raised and runs flat into the sea. Parking places, showers and a bathing supervision provide you carefree beach days. A promenade also offers cosy cafés and restaurants. Our tip: In the evening, watch as the sun sinks behind the neighbouring island of La Gomera on the horizon.
Playa Jardín, the "Garden beach" in the north of Tenerife is named with good reason, because the beach is surrounded by a tropical garden with exotic plants and flowers. It is located near the city of Puerto de la Cruz and the famous zoo Loro Parque. Here the soft sand is black and therefore nice and warm even on cooler or overcast days. From the promenade, which leads through the park, you have a wide view over the sea. Our tip: Admire the artificial waterfall on the beach and let your kids play in the mud on the adjacent playground.
Playa de Las Gaviotas with its very fine and almost black sand is one of the most impressive beaches of Tenerife. The beach is fringed by the mighty rocks of the Anaga Mountains and extends below the cliffs. Here it is almost deserted and locals love the closeness to nature and the pleasant peace. You will find parking next to the beach. Our tip: Lovers of nudism will find it in their interests to come to the fascinating Playa de Las Gaviotas, because here nude bathing is allowed.
If you are looking for a pristine natural beach, you are in the right place at Playa El Bollullo. This is located in the north of Tenerife and is framed by a cliff. Steps lead down onto the dark sand. The waves, rough at times, guarantee exuberant bathing fun, but should not be underestimated. During the week, the beach is usually infrequently visited, but at the weekend many locals spend their free days at El Bollullo. Our tip: Walk through the green banana plantations of La Paz in Puerto de la Cruz to the beach of El Bollullo
One of the top beaches of Tenerife is Playa de las Américas in the same place. Nowhere else in Tenerife are there so many water sports, restaurants and bars on the beach as here. The sand is light and fine and the sea mostly very calm and turquoise blue. Several loungers and umbrellas are available to relax. At the Las Verónicas night-club, right on Playa de las Américas, turn your night into day and immerse yourself in the colourful nightlife. Our tip: If you being more active, you can hire snorkelling gear or a surfboard on the beach.
A rather quiet beach, which can only be reached on foot, is Playa Abama on the south-west coast of Tenerife. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches of the Canary Islands with its almost white sand. The bay is only about 150m long and 30m wide, but offers clear, blue water, which is pleasantly quiet thanks to the breakwater. Since it is about a 20-30-minute walk from the car park to the sea, there are usually only a few tourists to be found here. Our tip: Experience the leisurely sound of the waves at Playa Abama with a good book or a cool drink in your hand.
The aptly named beach of El Médano in the south-east of Tenerife is in English "dune". The approximately 3km long, crescent-shaped bay consists exclusively of fine sand dunes and only about a third of it has been cultivated. The reason for this is the nature reserve around the 200m high red mountain Montaña Roja, which rises at the southern end of the beach and lends it a unique character. On the car-free beach promenade there are a number of cosy cafés. Our tip: Try kitesurfing or windsurfing at El Médano and enjoy the fantastic conditions that the north-easterly trades create for all surfers.
