The capital of the Czech Republic, Prague has been an important cultural centre for more than a millennium and was once the capital of the vast Holy Roman Empire. It is now one of the most visited cities in Europe and benefits from regular, fast flights from most major European airports.
The Castle
Officially the world's largest ancient castle, Prague Castle is more than half a kilometre in length and was once the seat of the rules of Bohemia. To give you a better idea of just how big this landmark is, it is approximately five times wider than the main facade of Buckingham Palace and approximately two times wider than Westminster Palace. The castle is home to some of the city's best known landmarks such as the Romanesque St George's Basilica and medieval St. Vitus Cathedral, as well as the famous Czech Crown Jewels, which have been stored at the cathedral for more than 200 years.
Old Town Square
With its architectural grandeur, vibrant cafés and visitors from all over the globe, the Old Town Square is one attraction you certainly won't want to miss on your trip to Prague. Adjacent to Charles Bridge, this square is overlooked by the Czech National Gallery, which showcases the largest art collection in the country and dates back to the late Georgian period. This square is also overlooked by the 14th-century Church of Our Lady before Týn, which features an 80-metre high tower and was built on the site of a former Romanesque church.
Charles Bridge
More than 500 metres long, this astonishing bridge is decorated with numerous baroque statues and statuaries, and was historically the only road link across the Vltava River. Despite extensive damage from wars and floods over the centuries, the bridge has been carefully preserved and still contains much of its originally 14th-century stone, although the crossing was originally known as the Stone Bridge until the 19th century.

Head to the Lucerna Music Bar for some fantastic jazz, or climb the Old Town Hall Tower and Astronomical Clock, one of the oldest astronomical clocks still in operation in the world. You could also treat yourself to a drink on the fifth-floor café of the striking Žižkov Tower, or enjoy world-class opera at the magnificent Prague National Theatre.
