Attractions
Copenhagen is perhaps best known for its picturesque 17th-century harbourside but more recently has become more widely known through the TV series The Killing and Borgen. You can join walking tours and visit some of the best known locations. Take in the views from the top of the 106-foot tower at Christiansborg Palace, or visit Tivoli Gardens with its amusement park, the second oldest and fourth most visited in the world. Or head out of the city to Elsinore and one of northern Europe's most important Renaissance castles.
Arts and culture
Copenhagen has a number of outstanding museums including The National Museum which has displays about the Vikings. The National Gallery of Denmark is home to an outstanding collection of international art and has hosted exhibitions as diverse as works by Picasso and Bob Dylan. When it comes to music, the city has a stunning opera house, a concert hall which is home to the Danish Symphony Orchestra, Europe's best popular music venue and a theatre which is also home to the Royal Danish Ballet.
Eating and drinking
Copenhagen has one of the highest number of bars and restaurants per capita in the world. Best of all the 15 Michelin-starred restaurants is Noma, voted best restaurant in the world four times but the city has a wide range of eateries to suit all tastes and pockets. Recent years have seen a huge rise in the number of micro-breweries, many of which are in the capital. Or why not head to one of the city's 'blanket bars' on the harbour? Order a drink, snuggle under a blanket provided by your bar of choice and watch the world go by.
Nightlife
If a night at the opera or a jazz bar isn't your thing then there is a wide choice of alternative nightspots whether you're looking for laid-back beats, mainstream disco or something a little more sophisticated. Try The Jane, a nightclub and cocktail bar that is pure Mad Men or how about Culture Box, a major venue for electronic music and many big name DJs.
Shopping
Copenhagen is a shopaholic's paradise with a great range of designer shops, vintage and second-hand boutiques and antique shops. Go to Stroget, the world's longest pedestrian shopping street which has many high street brands but also great Danish stores such as Hay and Illium Bolighus which sell beautifully designed houseware.
And if you're after an offbeat way to see the city, hire a kayak and explore Copenhagen's large network of canals.
