The Hamburg museum offers a good overview of the history of the city for a bargain entry fee which includes information written in German and English. Displays include light and sound to keep kids interested too, and for train lovers, the museum is home to a large-scale model train set.

If food and drink is your thing, there's a fantastic chocolate tour at Chocoversum where, of course, you can sample the chocolate and even make your own bars to take home. Aside from the sweet treats, the tour is really interesting and interactive.
