At night
When you step into the well-lit city you'll find a whole host of things to do in the evenings. German beers are famous all over the world, so try a trip to Fruh am Dom for a large pub with a great brewery and traditional German bar snacks.
Later in the evening the cocktail bars of Cologne have some impressive concoctions. Pepe is as central as they come, and the cocktail menu has a huge array of drinks that will appeal to everyone. Alter Wartesaal is a short walk away and based on the water. There you'll be able to sit out on the patio and enjoy the views while you sip one of their speciality drinks.
Seeing the city
The city is framed around its famous Cathedral, which stands out thanks to its intricate spires and Gothic design. The Cathedral is perfect for a visit, making for impressive photos and sitting next to a number of bars and cafes. You will find it easy to get there via train or bus, and once you've arrived, you should make sure to check out the enormous bell within, known as St. Petersglocke. An easy walk from there you'll find the Museum Ludwig. Inside is a fantastic collection of modern art, including one of Europe's most impressive collections of Picasso paintings.
For a slightly darker educational trip visit the National Socialism Documentation Centre. Here you'll find a completely preserved Nazi prison. Although difficult at times, the museum houses some fascinating reminders of what it meant to be in Germany during World War II. The museum comes well recommended though it may not be for the faint-hearted.
Eat and drink
There are tonnes of great places to eat in Cologne, and a selection of ways to do it. For the authentic feeling why not try out the beautiful 16th-century house that houses Em Krutzche. The restaurant's suckling pig is famous, and was even visited by Bill Clinton and Tony Blaire during their time in the city. If you want somewhere a little larger and more up to date then Husarenquartier Bistro Herbert Brockel serves gourmet food and is just outside of the city. After a short drive you'll be able to enjoy something a little different and very well priced.
