Before the Norman Conquest, the area of Teignmouth was actually two distinct settlements, although the local population increased later in the Middle Ages, when the town became a strategic fishing port. Many local people were also employed in shipbuilding during the Industrial Revolution, when the town contained three shipyards, one of which was used for the manufacturing of torpedo boats for the Second World War.
