Newcastle-under-Lyme is home to an active cultural scene, with the town hosting some of the area's most interesting arts venues. The New Vic Theatre was built in 1986 as Europe's first purpose-built theatre in the round. Hosting a range of comedy, drama, music and dance performances, the New Vic is an excellent place to spend an evening. Another important local cultural centre is the Borough Museum & Art Gallery, set in Brampton Park. The museum contains overs over 2, 000 years of history and features exhibitions on everything from Victorian ironmongers to collections of historical toys. Every year the town hosts the Newcastle Festival for Music, Speech and Drama, and if you happen to be visiting at the same time make sure you check out the various performances, talks and events.
Shopping and entertainment
Since 1173 the town has been home to a traditional market, known locally as The Stones. Still held every week, the market is pleasant place to spend a few hours perusing through fresh produce, antiques and flowers. The town also has a burgeoning high street full of independent shops and big brand names. You'll find plenty of pubs and restaurants in Newcastle-under-Lyme, from the artisanal Italian cuisine of Bellinis Italian Restaurant & Cafe to the cosy watering hole of Blakey's Cafe Bar. For live music, the Old Brown Jug is a local favourite and features an excellent range of jazz, rock and indie acts each week.
Further afield
There are plenty of interesting attractions within driving range of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Head to the neighbouring town of Stoke-on-Trent and you'll find Trentham Gardens, Gladstone Pottery Museum and Water World, Stoke-on-Trent. Also within reach of the town is Alton Towers, one of the UK's most popular theme parks and home to rides such as Oblivion, Air and Nemesis. If you'd rather explore an area of exceptional natural beauty, the Peak District National Park is a short drive to the east.
