Betws-y-coed Hotels

The name of the village means ‘prayer house in the wood', as it was founded and built around a monastery in the sixth century. Betwys-y-Coed hotels are in reassuringly quiet and peaceful settings. Every single one is inspected annually by the Welsh Tourist Board, so you'll have a pleasant experience no matter where you stay.

Outdoor pursuits

You're spoilt for choice when it comes to hiking trails and walking routes in the area. Guided tours are available, or you can take in the views in your own time. You can also hire a mountain bike or sign up for caverning and cave walking, rock climbing and abseiling, tree top walks and more.

The Swallow Falls are a famous point of interest, with a nearby guesthouse named after them. The falls are part of the River Llugwy, which joins the River Conwy just north of the village. Venture west along the A5 to reach the Miner's Bridge across the Llugwy, an unusually shaped wooden structure with a steep incline over the river.

Pastimes and activities

The nearby Conwy Valley Railway Shop and Museum is a must-see. A miniature railway takes you around the grounds – at certain times of year, an authentic steam train does the pulling. It's close to the Betwys-y-Coed rail station, which connects the village to Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Play a few rounds and practice your swing at the Betwys-y-Coed Golf Club. The green is almost completely bordered by the river.

Hearty meals

To do all of that exploring, you'll need to eat well. Betwys-y-Coed doesn't disappoint when it comes to warm, filling local fare. Check the menus at local eateries for freshly made Welsh cakes, Anglesey eggs and cheese-laden Welsh rarebit.

Bistro Betwys-y-Coed offers traditional Welsh dishes and a Sunday lunch menu. Fine dining can also be found at the Llugwy River Restaurant attached to the Royal Oak Hotel – it's won an AA rosette. In summer, try Cadwalader Ice Cream near the train station – and pop into The Alpine Café next door when it's cold.
