The area has been home to a defence since the Roman period, although Caernarfon received a new castle shortly after the Norman invasion of Wales. Over the centuries, the castle was altered on several occasions, although it was also attacked during multiple sieges, most notably during the English Civil War in the 17th century.
For the next 300 years or so, the castle fell into dereliction, although the building was carefully restored in the late Victorian and Edwardian era, when much of it was rebuilt. However, the castle's earlier deterioration did not deter the famous artist, J. M. W. Turner, from finding the inspiration to paint it on his visit to the area in the 1830s.
Today, Caernarfon Castle is the home of the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which showcases the history of the Royal Welch Fusiliers infantry regiment, which fought in many international conflicts, from the Wars of the Spanish Succession to the American Revolutionary Wars. Caernarfon is also home to an attractive 19th-century Market Hall, which is surrounded by several older 17th and 18th-century landmarks. In 2014, the building reopened after a substantial renovation, and now houses a large brewery, bar and restaurant.
