Holidays to San Diego
San Diego is one of the USA’s most exciting cities. The city is famous for the San Diego Comicon, the San Diego Zoo and even as the city of choice for Will Ferrell’s iconic film Anchorman. San Diego itself is located on the west coast of America, meaning it has beautiful coastal scenery and the famous Californian climate.
San Diego has taken good care of its countryside, so on your San Diego holiday you will find no shortage of national parks, beaches and reserves to visit. The Torrey Pines State Reserve has beaches, local wildlife and plenty of opportunity for walking or hiking if you feel like getting some exercise. The Sunset Cliffs National Park is similar, with plenty of coastal paths to explore and even surfing opportunities for those comfortable in the water.
Elsewhere on the coast you can find La Jolla Cove, a smaller beach with blue waters and sandy shores, more typical of a seaside holiday. If a less commercial beach is for you then Windansea Beach is a short drive away from the more touristy areas – there, surfing fanatics will find big waves and sun worshippers can enjoy the sandy beaches.
As a US city on the water, San Diego has a proud naval history. You can experience it now with museums and monuments dedicated to sailors from all over the states. To learn more you can enjoy a great day out aboard the USS Midway Museum. The museum itself is housed within an impressive American aircraft carrier, with loads to do on board. Keep the kids entertained with rides on flight simulators, or by exploring the aircraft gallery that displays refurbished planes for you to see up close.
Continuing the military theme, visit the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. The cemetery itself overlooks the water. The focal point of the cemetery is a memorial to the fallen and can make for a really humbling afternoon experience.
A lively day out
The San Diego Zoo is a good enough reason for many Americans to travel across the country and visit the city. The zoo is one of the most famous in the world and contains a huge variety of wildlife, from desert and tropical animals, to polar bears and arctic foxes.
Petco Park, a baseball stadium in the city, is home to the San Diego Padres. Americans love sport, and this enormous monument is proof of that. Take a tour of the stadium, catch a game and head home with a bagful of branded merchandise as great souvenirs. Out of season the park is a huge music and entertainment venue.
