Practical information

• Spoken languages: English is the official language of Jamaica, which makes communication easy for UK travellers. However, you’ll also hear Jamaican Patois spoken widely.

• Local habits and customs: Jamaicans value respect and politeness. It’s customary to greet people warmly and address elders with respect. The island has a relaxed pace, so embrace the laid-back lifestyle.

• Currency: Jamaica uses the Jamaican dollar (JMD), but given the constant fluctuation of the Jamaican dollar, the US dollar has long served as an unofficial parallel currency and prices for tourist services – hotels, car rental, sightseeing tours, etc – are usually quoted in US$. ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas, and most places accept major credit cards.

• Getting around: Jamaica has a range of public transport options. Buses and route taxis are the most common and cost-effective means of getting around. A single journey on a bus costs around J$100, while route taxis start at J$300 for short distances. If you plan to use public transport frequently, consider purchasing a daily or weekly pass from the local transport authority. Taxis are also available and can be booked via ride-share apps like Uber in Kingston and Montego Bay.

• Electricity and plug types: Jamaica uses 110 volts. UK travellers will need an adaptor.

• Time zone: Jamaica is on Eastern Standard Time, which is 5 hours behind GMT. The island does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so there’s no time change between summer and winter.
