Summer sunshine? On holiday, sizzling in the sun on the beach is not for everyone. Especially those with more pale skin and children should avoid too much bright sun. Nevertheless, you do not have to do without the beach holiday: We've put together ten beaches that offer travellers retreats in sunny destinations.
At the Playa de Formentor beach in Pollença in the north of Majorca, holidaymakers will find plenty of shade on hot summer days due to the lush pine trees on the beach. The versatile range of cafés, restaurants and sports facilities also offers a lot of variety for those who do not just want to lie in the sun. The straw umbrellas and wooden loungers on the beach give it almost a Caribbean flair.
In the north of the village of Arbatax lies the beach of Cala Mariolu, one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia, with its white sand and clear turquoise waters. It can be reached by boat or via a hiking trail. In the bay, the sun shines only in the morning, from early afternoon it is completely in the shade.
Holidaymakers will find protection from the sun in the huge ochre cave, which is located about 100 metres from the beach of Benagil. The cave can be reached either by swimming or with a small boat. A climb to the cave should not be missed, because it offers a spectacular view from above of the coastal landscape of the Algarve.
The beach "Golden Cape" is located only a few kilometres from the port city of Rovinj on the peninsula of Istria. The beach is popular with locals and tourists alike and is one of the most beautiful in Croatia. The coastline borders directly on a nature park, and its trees give the visitors a lot of shade.
The Bella Vraka beach is located on the small island of Mourteméno and is accessible via a strip of sand from the western Greek city of Syvota. The white sand beach offers a Caribbean flair with diving and snorkelling opportunities and thanks to the lush vegetation of the adjacent forest also a lot of shady retreats.
On the island of Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand, Haad Yao Beach, with its lush palm trees along the shoreline, offers plenty of natural shade. You can also cool down at the many beach bars on the white sandy beach. Also refreshing are the scuba diving and snorkelling trips offered on the beach's own reef.
One of the most unusual beaches in Mexico is the cave beach "Hidden Beach" on the Marietas archipelago. The beach can only be reached via a water tunnel or by boat with an experienced guide. The paradisical beach beauty was created during the First World War by bomb experiments, which were then carried out in today's nature reserve.
Hikers will find a very special corner on Menorca's south coast: the Cala Macarella is one of the most popular bays on the island. The fine sand of limestone and the turquoise sea make the beach so unique. Visitors will find a shady spot all day long under the many pines and rocks.
Shade, also for four-legged friends, is provided on the dog beach, Bracco Baldo Beach, in Peschiera del Garda. Here dogs can not only swim with their owners in Lake Garda, but also relax under the shady trees. If that's not enough, you can also rent a extra parasol for your dog.
The Croatian town of Orebić is located on the Pelješac peninsula in the south of the country. The pebble beach Trstenica offers natural shade, especially in the western part of the high pine trees. Towards the sea, the beach becomes sandy and the deep blue water provides a good refreshment for those who want to keep a cool head.
