The Best Pubs Near Paddington Station

The spectacular original design of Paddington Station was inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace. Although it's been refurbished over the years, the station is still worth a wander around from an architecture point of view. However if you would rather wile away your time in a pub or bar, we have selected our favourites around Paddington Station.

If you haven't got time to leave the station, this strikingly titled pub might be your best bet (it even has departure boards inside). Named by a competition winner, this pub is surprisingly light and airy for one inside a station. With a wooden interior and seven real ales on tap, it has the feel of a traditional British pub.

The Victoria

Need to know

As is befitting for a pub named after a former monarch, there's an ornate, plush and regal feel to this pub, which was built  around 1838. In the warmer months you can sit outside or head to one of the snug upstairs rooms for a post-dinner port. You'll also see why Charles Dickens spent time there writing "Our Mutual Friend". If it feels a little Downton Abbey-esque, that might be because it used to be a meeting point for butlers who worked in Paddington's grand houses.

This memorabilia-stuffed pub is possibly one of the most eccentric in London. It serves real ale, Thai food and is a shrine to the Royal Family and gentlemen with moustaches - which you can imagine makes it rather hard to categorise. From the odd sentry box and high seating outside, to the interior which is covered from floor to ceiling with pictures and plates - you definitely won't be stuck for conversation in here. Getting there: 29 Crawford Place, London, W1H 4LJFeeling hungry?: They serve authentic Thai food dailyOpening Hours: Mon-Thur: 11am to 11.30pm, Fri-Sat: 11am to midnight, Sun: 12pm to 10.30pm

The station's links to Paddington Bear was celebrated in 2000 when a life-sized bronze statue of Paddington was designed by sculptor Marcus Cornish. It was unveiled in the station by Paddington's creator Michael Bond and is now a popular spot for tourist selfies.

Old Marys

Need to know

You're kind of getting three places in one if you make the walk towards Lancaster Gate. The Mitre (Grade II listed) has original fixtures, fittings and armchairs, or you can head upstairs for a steak in the Lord Craven Grill (you eat in the Victorian dining room). Or alternatively, you can enjoy cocktails and craft beer in Old Mary's, which used to be the old servants' quarters. Both the grill and cocktail bar are supposedly named after two real-life players in a classic Victorian melodrama (Master and servant star-crossed lovers), and like all good historic pubs worth their salt, might even be haunted.
