History

The history of Selby can be traced back to the town's roots as a Viking settlement. This long history means that there are a number of historical sites dotted throughout the area. King Henry I is reputed to have been born in the town in around 1069, the Civil War-era Battle of Selby took place in the town and the area was also renowned for ship building throughout the 19th century.
