The historical motte and bailey remains of the medieval Sandal Castle provide a great environment in which to relax and explore. Overlooking the River Calder, enjoy panoramic views of Wakefield and the rolling Yorkshire Pennines.
Set in 300 acres of pristine parkland, Nostell Priory and Parkland offer a great day out. Take a guided tour around the 18th-century priory and discover the history behind the building. Outside you can go on a bat walk or stroll around the lake to spot kingfishers, and children can make the most of the large adventure playground.
Situated in the iconic Wakefield One building, Wakefield Museum has free entry to its many exhibitions devoted to the history of the local area. With hands-on activities such as dressing up, the building also houses the Create Café for a swift coffee and cake.
On the banks of the River Calder, the architecturally imposing Hepworth Wakefield art gallery houses contemporary British art and gives visitors the chance to get involved in a range of workshops such as print making.

Wakefield offers a range of eateries with Indian, Thai, Italian, Chinese and Greek restaurants all centrally located. Situated in a stunning Grade II listed building, The Cow Shed serves modern English cuisine, with a three-course lunch costing a reasonable £14.95.
