Not only is there plenty to do in and around town but North Berwick hotels offer the opportunity to explore the rest of East Lothian, a truly incredible part of Scotland.
Tantallon Castle
As you approach the town, whether by car or by train, you will not find it hard to see the natural beauty for which North Berwick is famed. However, the town's architectural splendour is equally impressive. Perhaps its most spectacular treasure is Tantallon Castle.
Perched on a clifftop three miles south of the town, this 14th-century fortress is open year round, and a climb up to its ramparts affords breathtaking views of North Berwick and its harbour.
Scottish Seabird Centre
From atop the castle, you may have spotted a large building right in the centre of the bay. This is the Scottish Seabird Centre, a must-visit for wildlife fans. The Firth of Forth, the south shore of which North Berwick is located on, is an important habitat for seabirds.
The centre, open every day, bar Christmas, has interactive live cameras on the Firth of Forth islands that are controlled by visitors. These include cameras on Bass Rock, which sits out to sea from North Berwick and is home to the world's largest Northern Gannet colony.
After you've marveled at the guillemots and puffins, make sure you drop in to the Seabird Café on your way out. The café is one of the best places to eat in town and, when the weather is good, its sun deck is a blissful spot.
Bass Rock and the Isle of May
For a closer look at Bass Rock and the nearby Isle of May National Nature Reserve, there are a range of boat trips that run daily from the harbour.
Between April and September is the best time to see nesting seabirds, while winter is when to visit if you want to catch a glimpse of the cute seal pups that also call the islands home.
Sea and sand
With so much to see and do in North Berwick, we haven't even got to what first attracted holidaymakers to the town. The resort has two sandy beaches, East Bay and the West Bay, that are wonderful places for a stroll. If the weather permits, you might even feel like a dip in the chilly North Sea, a truly invigorating experience.
Ice cream parlours and fish n' chips
North Berwick has all you could wish for in a seaside resort with excellent fish and chip shops and vintage ice cream parlours aplenty. North Berwick Diner and Fry is where to go for classic fish and chips in a family friendly environment.
For top quality fish, head to The Rocketeer Restaurant on Victoria Road, which serves up this British staple in a more formal setting.
After supper, head to Alandas Ice Cream Parlour, on the aptly named Quality Street, to round off the day in sugary style.
