The market cross that marks the town centre dates from the 16th century and is close to The Shambles, a medieval market stall. Throughout the town there are examples of a range of architectural styles, including the Palladian-style Old Bowlish House that dates from 1720 and the Grade II listed Anglo-Bavarian Brewery.
A short journey northwest of Shepton Mallet will take you to Wells, home of Wells Cathedral. The current cathedral dates from between 1175 and 1490 although it is built on the site of an earlier church dating from 705AD.
