Frome Hotels

Built on the banks of the River Frome, the town has more listed buildings per person than anywhere else in Somerset, and much of the centre is a conservation area.

Shopping

There are more than 200 shops in Frome town centre, many of them independent retailers selling everything from antiques and art supplies to clothing, gifts, books, records and artisan food.

There's also a farmers' market on the second Saturday of every month, an antiques market every Wednesday, Frome Country Market every Thursday, and general markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The Frome Independent, a market with independent food and drink producers and artisans, is held on the first Sunday of the month from March to December and attracts thousands of people.

Arts and culture

Frome has two theatres – the Memorial Theatre and the Merlin Theatre – a cinema and a concert hall, a former warehouse called The Cheese and Grain.

The town also has three arts centres. Rook Lane Arts, in a restored 18th-century chapel, holds events all year round, including concerts, storytelling sessions, film screenings, talks and art exhibitions, and has a landscaped garden too. The Silk Mill Studios also hosts concerts, theatrical performances and exhibitions, and is a base for artists and artisans – on open studio days you can see them at work. Black Swan Arts has studios, a gallery and a shop selling work by up-and-coming British artisans, including art, handmade jewellery, ceramics, sculpture, glassware, furniture, textiles and homeware.

The annual Frome Festival in July features more than 150 events, including classical music performances, jazz, folk music, literature readings, drama, film screenings and dance performances. Van Morrison, Steeleye Span, Paul Merton and Tony Benn have all been on the bill.

Museums

Housed in a Grade II listed 19th-century building, Frome Museum contains a collection of objects relating to the history of the town and its industries. There are artefacts from the bronze foundry, the ironworks, the blacksmith's and the printing works, including an old printing press. There are also Victorian and 20th-century costumes, rocks and fossils, and some artworks.

Eating and drinking

You can still see the original beams and walls in the Grade II listed Archangel pub, which has existed for more than 900 years and been an inn since 1311. Come here for pub classics with a modern twist, as well as barbecues and live music in summer, real ales, cocktails, afternoon tea and sometimes exhibitions by local artists.

The restaurant at the popular Thai Kitchen has a small but daily changing menu, as well as a deli which stocks more than 200 Thai ingredients. Here you'll find spices, sauces, fresh vegetables, dried foods, curry pastes, rice, noodles and much more.

For lunches, cream teas and cakes, visit the award-winning Meadowside Farm Café, which rears its own free-range chickens, turkeys, lamb and pork, producing most of its own meat and eggs. You'll also find gifts on sale here.
