Sherborne Abbey

Sherborne was the capital of Wessex, one of the seven Saxon kingdoms of England. The Saxon leaders King Ethelbert and King Ethelbald are both buried in Sherborne Abbey. One of the most breathtaking buildings in the county of Dorset, the abbey attracts visitors from all over the country. The site of the abbey originally held a Saxon cathedral and several Saxon features remain in the current Norman-style church. In addition to the tombs of King Ethelbert and King Ethelbald the church holds the tomb of Sir John Horsey and a memorial to John Digby, 3rd Earl of Bristol.

In addition to the abbey, Sherborne has a number of other well-preserved medieval structures, including the almshouses of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist as well as The Conduit in the centre of the town. For a fine example of later architecture, Sherborne House is grand 18th-century manor house designed by the famed British architect, Benjamin Bastard.

Castles

Sherborne is also home to two castles. Sherborne Old Castle dates from the 12th century and was ruined following two sieges during the Civil War. It currently occupies a position in the ground of the newer Sherborne Castle, built in 1594 by Sir Walter Raleigh. The castle grounds are ideal for both family picnics and romantic strolls through the ruins, while the interior of the castle features over 400 years of art and furniture and makes for a fascinating few hours.

For a comprehensive view of Sherborne's rich history head to Sherborne Museum, housed beside the old town wall on Church Lane in a former Benedictine monastery. The museum includes fossils, medieval wall paintings, Gothic manuscripts and photographs of early 20th-century life in the town.
