The cheese is named after the village, which itself comes from the Old English word for ‘deep dark cavity'.
Cheddar Gorge is to the east of the village – visiting is free, but there's a charge to enter the caves. There are lots of ‘show caves' to explore, as well as ‘Jacob's Ladder'. The north side of the gorge is a National Trust site, and the south side is part of the Longleat Estate.
The big name in cheese-making here is The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company. It's the last one in the country to produce cheddar by hand. You can sample the cheese, watch it being made and buy Cheddar souvenirs.
It's a short stroll to and around the Cheddar Reservoir. The path around it isn't officially public – access is allowed by owners Bristol Water – so remember to keep dogs on leads.
The village sits at the south side of the Mendip Hills, and is bordered by woods and green spaces. The Cheddar Wood is one of the largest, with the Cheddar Woods Lodge & Resort at the edge.
For a different type of green, play a round over at Cheddar's crazy golf course. The 18-hole course balances fun for the kids with a bit more of a challenge for the adults.
There's more to eat in Cheddar than just the cheese. Grab some fish and chips, order an Indian takeaway or have a sit-down meal at a waterside restaurant next to the Cheddar Yeo River.
From the lower gorge down to the village's Market Cross, the path is lined with tearooms and cafés. Stop for a quick rest or to look out over the route as it winds to and from the centre of Cheddar.
The area is also home to the Cheddar Ales microbrewery. Tours of the brewery are usually run in the evenings, making it more of a night out.
