Historic attractions

Carlisle has a rich Roman history and the settlement built here, known then as ‘Luguvalium', served the forts on Hadrian's Wall, which can be visited nearby.

The city's border location has made for an extremely turbulent past and there were frequent battles between the English and the Scottish for possession. It was held to siege ten times in total – more than any other place in the British Isles. Carlisle Castle was instrumental in the defence of the city and still stands today, an impressive attraction which is fun to visit and educational for all the family.

Carlisle Cathedral is a jewel in the crown of North West England and has stood for almost 900 years. Services are still held in the cathedral, delighting its many visitors. Next to the cathedral is The Prior's Tower which houses a small exhibition in its pele tower.

Tullie House and the Guildhall Museum, housed on the upstairs level of Carlisle's only medieval house, are just two of the myriad of educational and interesting, historical buildings in Carlisle.

Arts and culture

Carlisle is famous for hosting many festivals and attractions throughout the year. Each spring, visitors can delight in the Easter International Market, where a selection of traders from around the world offer a wonderful range of continental foodstuffs.

The Carlisle Great Fair is held in late August each year and is a festival not to be missed. Originally established in 1353, the fair has a stream of decorated floats, an open-air street market complete with Victorian-dressed stallholders and plenty of live music.

Hundreds of rally car enthusiasts descend upon the city during the last weekend of April as the Pirelli Carlisle Rally zooms into town.

Sports and recreation

There's plenty to keep sports fans occupied in Carlisle. The city is home to a racecourse which holds the Cumberland Plate and Carlisle Bell races every year, carrying on a tradition which dates back to the 16th century.

Recent redevelopment of parts of the city has seen a state-of-the-art sports facility built. Providing athletics, football and hockey amenities for local use, and constructed to Sport England standards, including facilities for disabled athletes, the centre is a great asset to the city.

Food and drink

With a myriad of different cuisines available to choose from in Carlisle, there's something to suit every taste. From serene afternoon tea in the Anazao Tearoom and Gallery to traditional home-cooked British fare in David's Kitchen, visitors can enjoy many a tasty meal.
