Old Oban

The best way to see the many historic buildings scattered around the town is on foot. McCaig's Tower looks over the whole of Oban Bay and also offers spectacular views of the islands of Mull and Kerrera.

If you are here in the summer, make sure you hear the Oban Pipe Band play the top of the tower at sunset, you don't get more of a quintessentially Scottish experience than this.

There are two castles in Oban and both are easily reachable on foot. Dunrollie Castle is the closest to the town centre, situated at the opposite end of the bay from the train station. It too stands on a hill and is well worth a visit.

Dunstaffnage Castle is not as old as Dunrollie but is no less impressive. It is about three miles outside of Oban, to the north. A walk here and back is the perfect way to spend a blustery winter's afternoon.

There are many top class pubs in Oban, most of which are near the harbour front. Of these, Lorne is a local favourite and the perfect place for a nightcap.
