Hotels in Dunbar

One of Scotland's most popular tourism destinations, Dunbar is revered for its panoramic coastal views and is best known for being the birthplace of the famous explorer John Muir. This fascinating town, which was once a Royal Burgh, and has belonged to Scotland for approximately 1,000 years, although the area has probably been inhabited since at least the Iron Age.

Places to visit in Dunbar:

John Muir's Birthplace

The former home of one of the world's most celebrated conservationists, John Muir's Birthplace is a popular museum and visitor attraction. Learn about Muir's exciting expeditions in this three-storey building, which has been carefully preserved in its original condition and is managed by the Friends of John Muir's Birthplace.

The Town House Museum

Housed in a formidable 16th-century building, this exhibition gallery showcases many fascinating local artefacts and is regularly open to the public. The Town House Museum also features what is believed to be the oldest Council Chamber still in operation in Scotland, and is close to many popular Dunbar hotels.

Dunbar Castle

Although now largely in ruins, Dunbar Castle was once a strategic defence and was largely demolished in the 16th century, although some of the stone was used for the construction of a quayside in Edinburgh. The John Muir Country Park, which includes the ruined castle, overlooks the town's historic harbour, and is an excellent place to witness the sunrise when there is good visibility.
