Sights in the city

A great place to start your sightseeing in the city is the Piazza San Marco. This central square is host to three of the most sought-after sights in the city. Pay it a trip and see the impressive St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's palace and the gorgeous clock tower of Torre dell'Orologio. Once you've taken in some more of the Italian architecture you might want to move on to the Gallerie dell'Accademia which houses some of Venice's best artistic treasures. Even if you aren't usually a museum person, this gallery is well worth a trip.

Venice's unusual build makes it particularly impressive from above, so if you didn't catch enough of it on your flight in then try climbing nearly 100 metres into the air at the Campanile to get a bird's-eye view. If you'd rather see the city's islands from the water then jump on a Vaporetto. Once on board you can crawl along the 2-mile Grand Canal trip, where you'll be see plenty of the beautiful city.

From the moment you get off your Venice flight you'll be greeted with an immediate combination of the smells and foods that Italy is famous for. The food in Venice is some of the best in the world, so choose carefully when you travel to the city and really make the most of it.

To go straight for a top-end meal you can visit Locanda Cipriani. It will be important to book ahead here, and the meal will cost you. However, it's well worth the money. The restaurant itself is on Torcello Island and is well renowned for its outdoor lunches amongst the pretty leaves and beautiful stonework of the garden. Of course, the grandeur of places like Locanda Cipriani isn't for everyone and there are plenty of more down-to-earth restaurants to stop off at.

If you're looking for an authentic and grounded Italian meal then the island of Giudecca is the place for you. Alla Palanca is located here, a notoriously popular lunchtime spot that won't take bookings but does enjoy huge popularity for their fantastic food.

After lunch why not head to the Skyline Rooftop Bar to watch the sunset? The bar is on Giudecca Island too, and enjoys one of the most picturesque views in the whole city.
